Fantasy Football RB Report: Cam Skattebo bounces back in a big way, plus more on backfield committees from Week 7

Week 7 is in full swing and we're about halfway through the 2026 fantasy football season. With that, we've gotten plenty of insight into how coaches are employing backfields (and which players are viable for fantasy). Yet, committees are ever-changing with injuries coming into play and players underperforming.

Fumbling was a big theme last week as that issue caused Cam Skattebo to be benched. Well, things turned around quickly a week later. We're going to go over that situation and a few more, plus advice on how to approach these players in fantasy moving forward.

A lot to unpack here. First, Skattebo was basically benched last week after losing the ball four times prior to Week 6. So it was tough to gauge his fantasy stock going into this Sunday. Of course, we all believed that Tracy would effectively take over the backfield split with Skattebo working his way back up to speed. That wasn't exactly the case.

Tracy went down with a hamstring injury in the second quarter and did not return. That paved the way for a huge outing from Skattebo, who basically sealed the game in overtime with a career-long 42-yard run. When you watch that play, you wonder why John Harbaugh would bench the second-year back at all. That's show biz, though.

Immediately after that Skattebo run, Singletary scored on a 30-yard run to win the game.

So where do we go from here? The injury to Tracy could make things clearer if he misses any time, though the Giants are on bye in Week 8. It'll be interesting to see how this three-headed dragon looks in Week 9 against the Eagles. But this type of game from Skattebo, given the type of player he is, should get him back to RB1 status for the G-Men. He's back in the RB2/3 conversation moving forward. Tracy's stock will depend on the injury severity. Singletary feels like a proactive stash off the waiver wire in case Skattebo struggles again and Tracy misses games.

Brown has quietly been one of the bigger busts in fantasy football so far in 2026. His high score of the season came in Week 1, when he had 16.3 fantasy points on 21 touches for 78 yards and a TD. He has double-digit touches in every game this season but isn't turning it into much because of a lack of explosives. Brown hasn't had one carry or reception go for more than 13 yards all season. Woof.

We saw more of the same in Week 7, as you can see in the chart above — Brown failing to find the end zone while backup Samaje Perine scored for a second straight game. This script was also weird in a way, as the Bengals failed to score in the first half but exploded for 35 points in the second thanks to Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase. Four of those five TDs in the second frame were passes inside the red zone. The other was the goal-line score for Perine.

None of that should make us feel good about Brown moving forward, but maybe we get some positive regression. In another universe, he finds paydirt in one of those red-zone trips and we aren't panicking as much. Maybe the explosives will open up, maybe they won't. If they don't start happening, Brown is trending toward RB3/flex territory. And if you need some help at RB, Perine is rostered in just 12% of Yahoo leagues. Next week will be telling with Cincy hosting the Titans.

The Vikings got Jordan Mason back from injured reserve for this contest in a good setup against the Colts at home. And while the team improved to 6-0 on the season, you can't feel good about this offense overall. Minnesota skated by thanks to an elite defense (or another easy matchup against a poor QB). Anyway, I digress.

Jones was dinged up during this game and exited in the fourth quarter with a knee injury. Given his history of injuries, this could hold him out of games, though we'll need more info. Mason was used heavily coming back from injury and was solid at 4.5 yards per carry. But might his upside be capped?

Let's take a look. The Vikings only have nine total TDs in six games this season. They also have tough opponents the next four games — the Lions, Bills, Packers and 49ers. These should be good offensive game environments, but it could also expose QB Kyler Murray and the passing game a bit. If that unit can't get going, it may be easy to defend the run. So while the volume could be there for Mason if Jones sits, he'd need to break off chunk runs or hope for goal-line carries, something that could be scarce.

If both backs are healthy next week, it would cap the ceiling for each. Mason and Jones would be low-upside RB3/flex options. If Jones sits, Mason can get into the RB2 conversation since he'd get the majority of the carries. It would provide a safe floor but I'm not sure the ceiling is entirely there with how Minnesota has looked on offense.
