Week 1 Brevard HS football: Viera, Melbourne, Astronaut, Cocoa, Heritage among winners

The first week of the FHSAA season in Brevard County was an exciting one with five FHSAA teams earning wins.

Cocoa won over Merritt Island in double over time and Heritage earned an overtime win at Titusville. Viera, Melbourne, and Astronaut also won games in Week 1. Holy Trinity, Satellite, Space Coast, and Bayside all picked up wins in the SSAA.

Cocoa 30, Merritt Island 24 (2 OT)

In a double overtime battle, Cocoa running back Javeon Scott scored the winning touchdown to give the Tigers a win over Merritt Island.

Cocoa scored first in the game after quarterback Champ Smith found Troy Silberzahn for a 15-yard touchdown pass with three minutes left in the first quarter.

The Mustangs tied the game four minutes before halftime on a 3-yard touchdown run by Deshaun Thomas. Cocoa regained the lead right before halftime after kicker Keenan Gonzalez made a 30-yard field goal.

In the third quarter, Merritt Island kicker Liam Miller tied the game again after he made a 28-yard field goal. Alain Adams put Merrit Island ahead in the game with 5:39 on a 23-yard run. Cocoa tied the game in the fourth quarter with a touchdown of its own to send the game to over time.

Scott scored a touchdown in the first overtime for the Tigers, the Mustangs responded with a touchdown of their own to send the game to a second overtime.

Cocoa's defense prevented Merritt Island from scoring in the second overtime. Scott's 20-yard touchdown run then won the game for the Tigers.

Cocoa (1-0) will host Mainland for Week 2 and Merrit Island (0-1) will host Melbourne on Aug. 29.

Viera 22, Rockledge 21

Shaun Hartman caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Eric Nelson late in the fourth quarter to lead the Hawks to a close win over Rockledge.

With 1:24 left in the fourth, quarterback Nelson connected with Hartman on a 9-yard touchdown. The Hawks followed the touchdown up with a successful 2-point conversion to win the game.

Earlier in the game, the Raiders got on the scoreboard first after Rahiem Cutter ran 96 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Matthew Ford caught a 41-yard touchdown pass to then put Rockledge ahead 14-0 with 9:05 left before halftime.

Viera scored its first points of the night after Nelson found Jonah Woodruff for a 31-yard touchdown pass. The Raiders led at halftime after Joseph Watkins Jr. connected with Michael Gonzalez Jr. on a 30-yard touchdown pass.

In the third quarter, Duke Butler scored on a 6-yard run to put the Hawks within seven points.

Rockledge (0-1) will go to Eau Gallie for a Week 2 matchup and Viera (1-0) will host Deltona on Aug. 29.

Melbourne 58, Cocoa Beach 7

A high-scoring first half pushed Melbourne to a win over Cocoa Beach. Tyrese Jefferson scored three touchdown in the first half for the Bulldogs.

Jefferson scored his first touchdown of the night with 7:26 left in the first quarter. Almost three minutes later, he doubled the score for his team with a 4-yard touchdown run. Kymarion Johnson also scored a rushing touchdown for Melbourne in the first quarter.

The Minutemen scored their touchdown with 2:05 left in the first quarter after Remy Vigne connected with Ryan Rogers on a 30 yard touchdown pass.

In the second quarter, CJ Hall scored a rushing touchdown and he also threw a touchdown pass to Ty Field. Jefferson and Hall both added to Melbourne's lead after scoring rushing touchdowns in the second quarter. Mikey Rogers scored on an 18-yard run to give Melbourne one final touchdown in the third quarter.

Cocoa Beach (0-1) will travel to Vero Beach for a game against Master's Academy on Aug. 29. Melbourne (1-0) go to Merritt Island for Week 2.

Bayside 19, Atlantic (Port Orange) 6

The Bears produced points in every quarter of their win over Atlantic in Week 2 of the SSAA season.

Raul Vernon opened up the scoring when he made a 27-yard field for Bayside late in the first quarter. Joey Costa connected with Colston Patterson on a 6-yard pass to put the Bears ahead 10-0 at halftime.

Bayside got two more points after a safety in the final moments of the third quarter. Evan Sherburne caught a 25-yard pass from Costa in the fourth quarter to score Bayside's final touchdown of the night.

Bayside (1-1) will host Palm Bay for its next game on Aug. 29.

Vero Beach 41, Eau Gallie 31

Eau Gallie fell to Vero Beach in a battle on the road. Eau Gallie freshman X'Zavier Corbin scored three touchdowns in the game for the Commordores, including a 99-yard kick return in the first quarter.

Vero Beach scored first in the game, but the Commodores quickly responded by scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. Corbin returned a kick 99 yards for a score with 5:43 left in the first quarter, then Xavier Lherisse scored on a 1-yard with a minute left in the first quarter.

Corbin also scored two rushing touchdowns in the second half and Lukas Viselli scored on a 2-yard run for Eau Gallie in the fourth quarter.

Eau Gallie (0-1) will welcome Rockledge for a Week 2 game on Aug. 29.

Astronaut 38, Palm Bay 13

Astronaut opened its season with a win after defeating Palm Bay. The War Eagles scored twice in the first quarter and once in the second, and the Pirates put six points of their own on the scoreboard in the first quarter.

Astronaut added to its lead with a 27-yard field goal by Connor Lamothe in the third quarter. War Eagles quarterback Brennan Waldrop threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Rainey and Nari Hagans scored once more for the War Eagles in the fourth quarter. Palm Bay's second touchdown of the night was also scored in the fourth quarter.

The War Eagles (1-0) will go on the road for a game at Gateway and Palm Bay (0-1) will be at Bayside on Aug. 29.

Holy Trinity 28, Legacy 14

The Tigers picked up a home win over Legacy. The Tigers scored 21 points in the first quarter and never trailed in their win. Holy Trinity (1-0) make the trip to Titusville for its next game.

Satellite 19, Halifax Academy 0

The Scorpions won their second straight game of the season after defeating Halifax Academy. Satellite (2-0) will play a home game against Freedom on Aug. 29.

Heritage 25, Titusville 19 (OT)

Heritage grabbed an overtime win on the road at Titusville. The Panthers led the game at halftime thanks a 14-yard run by Dreyvon Lee and a 77-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Pidala to Nathaniel Owens in the second quarter.

The Terriers scored first out of halftime and Heritage also scored once in the third quarter. Titusville scored twice in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime. The Panther would score one final touchdown to win the game in overtime.

Heritage (1-0) will have a home game against Seminole on Aug. 29, while Titusville (0-1) will host Holy Trinity.

Space Coast 7, Gateway 2

Zion Sandy's 18-yard touchdown pass to Kadyn Thomas propelled the Vipers to a win over Gateway. Space Coast's touchdown came in the second quarter of the game with one minute left before halftime. The Vipers (2-0) will host St. Edward's for their next game on Aug. 29.

MCC 35, Somerset Academy-Canyons 7

The Hustlers picked up a road win at Somerset Academy-Canyons for Week 1 of the season. Melbourne Central Catholic (1-0) is set to host Trinity Catholic for Week 2 on Aug. 29.

Merritt Island Christian at Ocala Christian

The Cougars improved to 2-0 after earning road win at Ocala Christian. Bode Handwork threw two touchdown passes and Caleb Richeson scored two rushing touchdowns in the win for the team. Merritt Island Christian (2-0) will be at S.L.A.M. Academy next Friday, Aug. 29.
