Tom Aspinall declares himself UFC heavyweight champion: 'We move on' past Jon Jones bout

The heavyweight division is moving on – or so Tom Aspinall says.

The interim UFC heavyweight champion still doesn't have his Jon Jones fight booked and appears to be presenting a new angle on the situation, though perhaps in an effort to court the current titleholder into their long-awaited showdown.

"Jon's retired," Aspinall recently said on "Good Guy/Bad Guy." "What are you talking about, guys? You guys don't follow Jon on social media? Me too, actually. But the guy's living his best life. He's had a fantastic career, we all know. We know Jon's a religious man, so I want to say God bless him moving forward in what he does in his life and his career. We move on. We move on.

"I'm the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I'm ready to take on all comers and get this division moving again. Those guys have been waiting along too long. The guys, the contenders are getting sick of it. Even the fans are getting sick of this stuff. Jon's retired and it's time that we move on."

It's unclear where the promotion currently stands on booking the bout. Jones recently indicated he might be done fighting and has told the UFC his exact plans, but he still remains champion as of publication.

UFC CEO Dana White has sworn up and down the bout will happen, but has not been asked about the bout in recent weeks. With UFC 316 fight week underway, it's likely White will be asked about the status in the coming days.
