Saints cut another quarterback, bring up several practice squad players for Week 1

Here we go -- the New Orleans Saints reported a quick list of last-minute roster moves before Sunday's season kickoff game with the Arizona Cardinals, waiving another one of their quarterbacks (just days after they let go of rookie backup Hunter Dekkers again) while bringing up a couple of players from the practice squad in the process. So who's up? Who's down? And why do these moves matter?
Let's break them down.
QB Jake Haener waived from the 53-man roster
It's been a busy couple of weeks for Haener, who was let go during roster cuts, re-signed to the practice squad, and then elevated to the 53-man roster, only to be waived again. The plan must be to treat him as a 54th roster spot who can safely clear waivers and shift between the practice squad and active roster as needed. Either way, he isn't much of a factor in the decision to start Spencer Rattler with Tyler Shough waiting in line as the backup.
EDGE Fadil Diggs signed to the 53-man roster
Diggs is the next man up with Chase Young out for this game due to a calf injury; the rookie seventh-round pick brought some pressure in the preseason and could get on the field behind Cameron Jordan, Carl Granderson, and Chris Rumph II. He'll take Haener's spot on the 53-man roster, at least for now. Diggs can get pushed around in run defense so expect him to mainly rotate in on third downs and obvious passing situaitons.
EDGE Jonah Williams elevated for Week 1
Williams is one of two players elevated from the practice squad for this week's game; he'll revert afterwards, and the Saints can choose to bring him up two more times before they'll be required to sign him to the 53-man roster if they want to continue playing him. He's an experienced pro who has made plays in Brandon Staley's system before, so it makes sense to activate him with Young on the mend. We'll see if he splits reps with Diggs or lines up elsewhere on the defensive front. He split starter's reps with Nathan Shepherd as five-tech defensive ends over the summer.
TE Jack Stoll elevated for Week 1
The Saints had just two tight ends on the 53-man roster between Juwan Johnson and rookie seventh-round pick Moliki Matovao, so they clearly needed more depth. Stoll is a reliable blocker who can take some pressure off Johnson in that department. Just don't expect him to catch many passes. Like Williams, this is the first of three games he can be elevated for before the Saints have to sign him to the 53-man roster full-time. Maybe Foster Moreau or Taysom Hill is ready to come off the PUP list before they reach that point.
