Peyton Watson is all praise for the Cleveland Cavaliers

When the Cleveland Cavaliers landed Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets in August, many felt that it was a consolation prize. After all, the hope was that the Cavs would reunite with LeBron James for a third and final time. That hope was dashed after James opted to join the Philadelphia 76ers, and because of that, the Cavs had to pivot.
From that decision, the two names attached to the Cavs were Watson and Jonathan Kuminga. While they both seemed like a step down from James, the Cavs had a really intense desire to land one or the other. It was such a desire that neither was ruled out of joining the Cavs even if the team landed James.
As time went on, the Cavs ultimately picked Watson and acquired him during a five-team trade. They essentially gave up Dennis Schröder, Max Strus, and their 2031 first-round pick to land the Nuggets forward, who comes in with serious scoring potential and size that leads many to think he could become a great defender. While the young wing may not have James' legacy, he has far more potential and upside as a long-term fit.

For him to reach that upside, however, he'll need to be in the best environment to thrive, and according to the forward himself, Cleveland may be the place for that to happen. While speaking to the media in Spain, Watson was asked a question about the offseason and how he felt about the speculation that he could've ended up with the Los Angeles Lakers.
"I'm a kid from LA, so you know, that would be in their (the Lakers') ideal world story that works for them," Watson told the media. "The whole time, that was out of my hands regardless. I was a restricted free agent regardless...I think a lot of people misconstrue that. I think a lot of people thought I had a choice in where I wanted to go...I'm super glad I ended up here (Cleveland) because I don't think there's a better basketball fit for me or culture fit for me. This is exactly where I want to be. And I'm two feet in and 100% committed to the Cavs."
The hope is that Watson will be the missing piece for the Cavs, who look to not only repeat their Eastern Conference Finals run, but advance beyond it to the NBA Finals. His scoring ability will be helpful, especially when defenses target Donovan Mitchell more aggressively, but it's the upside of his defense that has many excited about what the young wing can do for the team.
Watson's defense in Denver was up and down, mostly because the team as a whole wasn't great defensively. The Nuggets were 21st in the league in points allowed, with 116.9 ppg, while the Cavs were 15th, with 115.4. The Cavs, however, have two of the better defensive bigs in the league in Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. The team struggled defensively last season because the Cavs had a lot of injuries and had to shuffle around a lot of talent for a variety of reasons.
Now, with a more settled roster and everyone healthy, the Cavs look to return their defense back to the top. So the hope is that Watson can help elevate the defense by playing in front of Allen and Mobley. It's an idea that Watson himself thinks can happen, as he believes he has elite-level defender potential. An idea that, if it comes to fruition, could make the Cavs better than anyone thought possible.
