How well is Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin being advised?

The Commanders/Terry McLaurin dispute officially reached a new low as McLaurin requested a trade on Thursday afternoon. It's been a wild week on the McLaurin front with the Commanders. It began last week when McLaurin didn't report for training camp.

On Sunday, McLaurin did report after missing four days, but immediately landed on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury. So, while McLaurin is at camp, he's not practicing.

Here are some things we know about the situation, which has led us to one conclusion.

  • The six-year veteran had, during this training camp, been a holdout and then a "hold-in." Each time Dan Quinn tells the media and fan base about Terry's injured ankle, how many are actually believing this?
  • When McLaurin talked for 32 minutes, attempting to turn the media and fan base against GM Adam Peters, how much did he discuss this ankle injury that was going to keep him from working out with the team?
  • Washington has numerous players who are without a contract for 2026. Do you see any of them holding out or demanding more?
  • Yes, DK Metcalf signed with the Steelers for a reported average salary of $33 million per year. Metcalf is also two years younger than McLaurin, and Washington can't do anything about the bad deal the Steelers gave Metcalf.
  • Isn't it also just as true that Courtland Sutton just this week signed a four-year extension worth $92 million, which works out to an overall average of $23 million per year?
  • Isn't Sutton age 29 just like Terry? And won't he also turn age 30 during this season, just like Terry?
  • "But Terry is so much better than Sutton!" you insist. How certain are you of that? Though Terry had the best quarterback of his career last year in Jayden Daniels, Terry only caught one more reception (82-81) than Sutton. He only had 15 more yards receiving (1,096-1081) and averaged only 1/10 more of a yard per reception (13.4-13.3).
  • Yes, Terry was much better than Sutton early in their careers. But don't the numbers testify that they are quite similar at this stage of their careers?
  • Have you noticed that when Schefter reported Terry wanted considerably more than the $33M APY deal, neither McLaurin nor his agent denied it?
  • What is Terry thinking? Request a trade? Now?
  • Terry is under contract for this season, and if he wants to be respected as a team leader in that locker room, shouldn't he be willing to do what many in that room are doing? Aren't many playing for a contract in 2026? Why is Terry now not willing to do what they are? And aren't they making less this year?
  • If Terry has a good year in 2025, but continues to ask for outrageous money, who knows, Adam Peters might just slap the franchise tag on McLaurin for 2026 as well. It would still be a very nice pay raise, but has Terry reached the stage where it's his way or the highway?

The conclusion: Might McLaurin need new representation? Because he has certainly not been advised very well for the last month.
