Colts attempted to add 2nd linebacker on waivers after cutdowns

Following roster cutdowns, the Indianapolis Colts claimed linebacker Chad Muma on waivers. However, Muma wasn't the only linebacker that GM Chris Ballard tried to add to his team.
According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Colts also put in a waiver claim on linebacker Cam Jones, who ultimately went to the New York Jets on waivers.
The waiver wire order this time of the year mirrors the 2025 draft order. So the Colts ranked 14th in priority.
In short, this means that if Indianapolis and Cincinnati had put in a waiver claim on the same player, the Colts would be awarded that player because they rank 14th in waiver priority, and the Bengals rank 17th.
The issue, however, in how things actually played out is that the Jets are ahead of the Colts in waiver priority, ranking seventh, which is why they landed Jones.
Players who had multiple teams try to claim them yesterday:
Jalyn Armour-Davis: Titans, Saints, Dolphins, Eagles,
Beau Brade: Giants, Jaguars
Jordan Jefferson: 49ers, Bengals
Cam Jones: Jets, Colts
Jaylon Jones: Bears, Patriots
Sam Womack: Titans, Browns— Field Yates (@FieldYates) August 28, 2025
Jones went undrafted in 2023 out of Indiana and spent his first two seasons in Kansas City. During that span, Jones has played 162 total defensive snaps and has been a core special teams contributor, totaling 622 snaps across four different phases.
The Colts have been very active since roster cutdowns when it comes to the linebacker position. They claimed Muma, put in another claim on Jones, and have had Anthony Walker and Kyzir White in for workouts recently.
Overall, this is an inexperienced group that the Colts have at the linebacker position outside of Zaire Franklin. Muma has played 725 career snaps in three seasons, Bachie has played 238, Segun Olubi 136, and Cameron McGrone nine.
