Broncos claim running back off waivers following RJ Harvey injury

The Denver Broncos have added a new running back to their backfield.

The Broncos claimed running back Cody Schrader off waivers from the Houston Texans on Monday, the team announced. Schrader (5-8, 202 pounds) is a second-year player who entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Missouri with the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.

The 26-year-old running back has bounced between the practice squads of the Los Angeles Rams, Jacksonville Jaguars and Texans this season. He was cut by Houston just five days after they claimed him off waivers from the Jags earlier this month. Schrader has appeared in two regular-season games in his career, rushing once for three yards and hauling in a six-yard reception with the Rams in 2024.

Denver had room for Schrader on the 53-man roster after safety Brandon Jones was placed on injured reserve. The Broncos now have four running backs on the active roster as Schrader joins R.J. Harvey, Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie.

Fans in Denver will hope that the addition of Schrader is not an alarming sign for the status of Harvey, who suffered a rib injury against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
