Right after Major League Baseball's trade deadline, there was a sense that the Boston Red Sox could have called up Franklin Arias. The idea of bringing up Arias would be simple: the Red Sox believed he could come in and make an impact, and if he did, they'd be a better team come playoff time.
Instead of that being the case, the Red Sox returned Trevor Story, allowing the veteran to come back and prove why he's one of the better shortstops in Major League Baseball.
Story hasn't been perfect since returning, but he's a guy who should be trusted.
As for Arias, it remains unclear what the Red Sox will do until something happens. However, according to the latest report, it doesn't look like Boston is going in that direction.
“It doesn't look that way. I feel like they would have called him up already. There are only 15 games left. Trevor Story looks like he can hold down shortstop with help from Nick Sogard and Andruw Monasterio. I think they want to be careful about not rushing Arias. That said, if someone's health takes a downward turn, you never know,” Ian Browne wrote.
The Red Sox being smart in a situation like this makes more sense than anything else. The last thing the organization wants is to bring in a guy who isn't ready, especially in a playoff push. With how much hype Arias has around him, the Red Sox likely don't want to put too much pressure on him to start.
However, as Browne touched on here, there is a sense that the Red Sox could allow him to debut if others get hurt.
