Davey reignites international ambitions with Wales

Megan Davey's international ambitions have been reignited at her self-proclaimed 'old' age of 26.

Loughborough Lightning's record appearance holder considered going into full-time teaching when she did not make Wales' 2026 Six Nations squad.

Her hopes were dashed again when omitted from Sean Lynn's extended training squad for the WXV Global Series.

"There was a little bit of a wobble," admitted uncapped Davey.

"It's hard to keep going when you're at my age, you feel old in the game."

But the half-back received a call-up last month and is now part of the 39-strong squad which will take on South Africa, USA and Japan.

"There's always been something inside me, I know I can do it, it's the voice inside my head that's kept me going," she said.

"I was really happy that I got an opportunity."

Davey qualifies for Wales through her grandfather from Llanelli but went through the English pathway system as a youngster.

"The avenue for under-20s was always really with England because it wasn't as set up with Wales, but now it's really good," she said.

"I'm a little bit older...now I feel like I can really do people proud."

And despite being a latecomer in camp, Davey says everyone has been welcoming.

"There's always that thing when you walk into an environment that's already established, you're like 'how am I going to do?' but I was really raring to go," she added.

"Obviously a bit sad that I wasn't in the squad to begin with, but you just crack on with what you're doing."

Davey has primarily trained at scrum-half with Wales and faces competition from Keira Bevan and Seren Lockwood.

And contrary to the stereotype of the position, the nines get along with no animosity.

"We all really enjoy each other's company. We want each other to do well, so there's never that hatred towards each other," said Davey, who has previously started at fly-half for Loughborough.

"Whoever goes out there and does the job first is the best pick for the team and you just need to back that completely."

Wales open their WXV campaign against South Africa at Cardiff Arms Park on Friday, 18 September (19:15 BST), and any potential involvement would mean the world to Davey.

"Playing international rugby is such a privilege and I want to make everyone proud - my family, but also the coaches that have been behind me for the last 15 years of my journey," she said.

"It's just that final step, like 'I made it'. I'm really excited and hopefully it comes at some point."
