Kyle Shanahan has glowing update on George Kittle after TE's surgery

While the San Francisco 49ers geared up for their divisional playoff matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, injured superstar tight end George Kittle was undergoing surgery to repair the torn Achilles tendon he suffered in the 49ers' wild card win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Thursday in his post-practice press conference provided an extremely positive update on Kittle that included some optimism for his return in 2026.

“I talked to him through text," Shanahan said. "He sent a funny picture of him and his after surgery to my wife. He seemed like he was feeling pretty good, like most people are right after surgery. But, I heard it went great. I heard it was a very successful surgery and could have a chance to come back a lot sooner than we used to think back in the day with Achilles. So, it was all good news.”

It's unlikely we get any additional updates on Kittle any time soon. The club won't be back together until sometime in early-to-mid April to begin their offseason program which is when we may get another check in on the TE. It isn't likely he'll be ready for the start of the year given the typical return-to-play timeline for Achilles tears, but it sounds like Shanahan is hopeful he can be back in action sooner than expected.
