ESPN analyst: Performance vs. Vikings 'unacceptable' for Jared Goff

After having a direct hand in five of Detroit's season-high six turnovers on Christmas Day, Lions quarterback Jared Goff wasn't going to be able to escape the heat that would naturally follow Detroit's 23-10 dud of a loss at the Vikings that ended their playoff hopes.

Being one of three Christmas Day showcase games also put Goff and the Lions under the national spotlight, and it's safe to say that Goff and Detroit didn't put their best foot forward.

ESPN analyst Ryan Clark sounded off on why the performance from Goff was "unacceptable."

"Jared Goff can build you up to make you believe that you have a chance. And then, you go back to the Super Bowl versus Bill Belichick and the way that that offense didn't show up under Sean McVay or you go back to the second half of the NFC championship in San Francisco. Think back to last year against the Washington Commanders and all the turnovers Jared Goff had in that game.

"And now you're going to look at a must-have-it game for the Detroit Lions. You understand what your defense is facing with all of those injuries and to turn the football over five times, to look hapless at many points in this game and also to feel like you don't have an answer to what Brian Flores and their defense is presenting to you, it's unacceptable for Jared Goff. This is an organization, this is a head coach, this is a general manager that has put the ultimate trust in Jared Goff to be able to elevate this team and yesterday he let them down," Clark said.

After a disappointing 2025 season, there will be more of these types of takes nationally and some internal questions that the Lions will have to ask and answer for themselves before 2026 arrives.

Ultimately, any way you slice it, the Lions are just one bad, injury-riddled season removed from capturing the NFC's No. 1 seed and two seasons removed from playing for a right to go to the Super Bowl.
