Indiana's Fernando Mendoza's 2025 season could not have been more perfect. He led his Hoosiers to an unblemished 16-0 season, captured the national championship in historic fashion and won the 2025 Heisman before being selected first in the 2026 NFL Draft by the Raiders. Now that the path is clear for someone new to leave NYC in December holding the Heisman, who will it be? Miami teammates Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney have made their mark early this season, while Trinidad Chambliss surged after a historic performance against his former coach, Lane Kiffin, and LSU. On Saturday night, however, another contender just entered the Heisman conversation after a huge win over Alabama. But Jeremiah Smith continues to steal the show. After another record-breaking performance, the Ohio State wide receiver strengthened his case to become the first pass-catcher since DeVonta Smith to win the award. And he knows it. Smith added to his historic season with four catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns. He now has 38 career receiving touchdowns, the second-most in Big Ten history. He needs one more to tie Braylon Edwards for the record and two to pass him. That built on last week’s performance, when Smith hauled in a 57-yard touchdown for his 36th career touchdown catch, setting Ohio State’s all-time record. He celebrated by striking the Heisman pose. He also set the record for most catches by any Ohio State wide receiver with 207. Saturday was his second consecutive game with over 200 receiving yards and multiple touchdown catches. Two weeks ago, Smith torched Illinois' defense last week to set his receiving yards record with 217. He also secured his first-career three touchdown game before halftime, and had 150 receiving yards in the first half. He finished the game with four touchdown catches, becoming the fifth Ohio State wide receiver to do so, after hauling one in early in the fourth quarter. He's up to 916 yards and 11 touchdowns on the season, and is now the Buckeyes all-time receiving leader in receptions, yards and touchdowns. Smith is now the heavy -190 favorite to win the Heisman. Mensah's Miami career couldn't have started much better. He immediately silenced the doubters by throwing for 401 yards and five touchdowns against Stanford in Week 1. In the process, Mensah became just the sixth quarterback since 2000 to complete at least 90% of his passes while throwing for 400 or more yards and five touchdowns in a game. He followed that performance by completing 14 of 15 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns in Miami's 77-7 win over Florida A&M in Week 2. Then, against Wake Forest on Friday night, Mensah completed his first 24 passes, two shy of the record for the most consecutive completions to start a game. Mensah continued on that path with 338 yards and four total touchdowns in Miami's rout of Central Michigan in Week 4. In Miami’s Week 5 blowout win at Clemson, Mensah added two touchdowns, 227 passing yards and 27 rushing yards. Through five games this season, he has only four fewer total touchdowns (17) than incompletions (21) as the Canes continue to roll. Mensah and Miami were on bye in Week 6. While Jeremiah Smith is running away with the Heisman, Stockton at least entered his name into the conversation on Saturday. He led the Georgia Bulldogs to their biggest win of the season, a 20-17 victory over rival Alabama. He threw for 249 yards and one touchdown. Stockton leads the SEC, completing 76.7% of his passing attempts this season, and has thrown for 1,298 yards and 14 touchdowns through six games. Aside from the completion percentage, his numbers don't jump off the page. But after Texas' loss to Oklahoma, Stockton is the quarterback on the soon-to-be No. 1 team. That helps vault his odds to +1200. Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr continued his quiet, but efficient season with 181 yards and three touchdowns as the third-ranked Fighting Irish dismantled Stanford 58-7. Carr has now thrown 16 touchdown passes compared to just one interception so far this season. His odds sit at +1200, but Carr's Heisman case will remain weak as Notre Dame only has three games against current AP top 25 teams on its schedule. Chambliss delivered a Heisman-worthy performance in Week 3, leading Ole Miss past his former coach, Lane Kiffin, and LSU. But the following week, the fourth-ranked Rebels fell into a trap, losing 52-28 to No. 21 Florida. Chambliss still put up respectable numbers, throwing for 298 yards and accounting for three touchdowns, including two on the ground. On Saturday, Chambliss bounced back in a big way, completing 20 of 30 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns in the Rebels’ blowout win over Vanderbilt. To stay in the Heisman race, though, he’ll need to keep Ole Miss winning through the rest of its SEC schedule. The trophy rewards more than just impressive stats. After leading Alabama to a statement win over Mississippi State and outperforming fellow Heisman hopeful Kamario Taylor, Keelon Russell's chances to win the Heisman trophy plummeted this Saturday. He and the Crimson Tide sustained a defeat to their arch rival Georgia, in which Russell threw for just 185 yards and one touchdown. The Tide will fall down the rankings as will the freshman in his chase for hardware.
